Yes, that is frequently (but not always) the case. The “7″ in a G7 chord refers to an alteration of the standard G Major chord.
The two are interchangeable in many circumstances, though each has its own sound-flavor.

Is it not that in the key of C we play C, F and G7 instead of G?
